modernism literature essays

PLEASE READ! i need a lot of help with this!?
ok so i am in an American Literature class and i have to write a ten page paper on pretty much anything i have read in my Nortan Anthology books. For example i can do Emerson, Anne Bradstreet, Poe, Thoreau, etc, etc. The problem with this is that i am not used to having so much freedom with writing and he gave us nothing to go off of. he just said write a ten page essay using one of these authors. iim not worried about the length, but i feel like i have no foundation, and have NO IDEA WHAT TO DO!!!!
the only requirement is to use a critical theory for example new historicism, structuralism, post modernism, modernism, etc. but i dont know how to use those since i dont know what to write! PLEASE HELP
Consider writing a biography of Edgar Allan Poe. How did his upbringing influence his choice of subjects and his writing style? Edgar Allan Poe was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. John Allan when his mother died at age 2. Could this have had an influence on his choice of subjects? Even though John Allan had plenty of money, he only gave Edgar about a third of what he needed for his college days. Although Edgar had done well in Latin and French, he started to drink heavily and quickly became in debt. He had to quit school less than a year later. What influence might this have had on the writer? In 1831, Edgar Allan Poe went to New York City where he had some of his poetry published. He submitted stories to a number of magazines and they were all rejected. Poe had no friends, no job, and was in financial trouble. How might this rejection have influenced the writer? He had trouble finding a job which he liked and which gave him enough money to pay his living expenses. How might this frustration have influenced his choice of subjects or his writing style?
