literature writing techniques

literature writing techniques
What texts do/did you read in English or literature class?

It would be particualry interesting to hear from students of other countries to see if there are any parallels.

American high schools usually follow this general formula:

9th grade-Themes and writing techniques
Romeo and Juliet, Lord of the Flies, To Kill a Mockingbird

10th grade-Archetypes:
Animal Farm
Julius Caesar
A romance text from the Romantic era

11th Grade: Amercian Literature overview
The Great Gatsby
The Crucible
Of Mice and Men
The Scarlet Letter

12 Grade British Literature
Beowulf
Canterbury Tales
Hamlet

I moved during my freshman year so I missed the chance to read Romeo and Juliet. (My old school was going to start it and when I got to my new school they had just finished it.) However, I did read:

Macbeth
Of Mice and Men
The Grapes of Wrath (can’t remember it at all though)
10 Little Indians (aka Until There Were None)
To Kill A Mockingbird
Lord of the Flies
Cry the Beloved Country (can’t remember this one either except for the fact that I thought it was a good book)
Sherlock Holmes
The Count of Monte Cristo

The Scarlet Letter
I read it on my own in 8th grade. In my 11th year we had to learn about the book but didn’t have to read it because my teacher said it was too long and *difficult* for most students.

Papillion by Henri Charriere
We all absolutely loved this book. It was for an advanced reading class. A section in the middle of the book was blacked out for content.

I remember reading a lot of poems, short stories, and plays (I loved A Doll’s House). Lots of Edgar Allan Poe and O’Henry. Plus we read Mark Twain and a portion of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass.

I haven’t read any of the others you listed (nor were they assigned reading in school.) It is very unfortunate. And I still can’t believe that I was never introduced to Jane Austen in high school or college! What a shame! Also I can’t figure out why there was no Wuthering Heights or Jane Eyre. I still haven’t read these but they are on my reading list.

Down the road I also want to read The Great Gatsby and The Catcher in the Rye.
